Roberto The Yolanda Roberto Marketing and Cultural Projects Ltd. Was founded towards the middle of last year with the main purpose of divulging deltiology in Brazil, and now, through the present project it accomplishes its third exhibition. "Reminiscing Portugal through Olden Postcards” brings forward to the public in Rio de Janeiro part of one of the greatest postcard collections in Europe. The Klaus W. Gruner collection, which counts with over 120 thousand pieces, was kindly placed at the disposition of the organizers who selected about 800 cards for this show. Due to its past, the Imperial Court becomes the ideal location to both shelter and divulge such a meaningful exhibit. For the first time in the Brazilian deltiological annals a cultural innitiative brings over a foreign collection of postcards, thus surpassing the distance that separates the two countries, which are nevertheless united in particular by their interwined history. We believe that “Reminiscing Portugal through Olden Postcards” will please the Portuguese citizens who live here as well as the Brazilians who love and consider the amiable Lusitanian country as their own. Roberto Klaus Werner Gruner was born in Gera, Turingia, Germany in 1940, the son of a German father and a Portuguese mother. He has lived in Lisbon since 1948, is married, has three children and is a successful business man who divides his time between Lisbon and the Algarve and who has a passion for collecting postcards, a hobby wih which he fills his leisure time. He would have been just one more collector if it were not for his monumental and selected collection. He had, undoubdetly, from very early on the intuition to start visiting second hand bookstores, called “Alfarrabistas” in Portugal, and thus managed to obtain part of his magnificent collection through the collaboration of their suppliers. There are many picturesque passages concerning the storage and preservation of so many postcards. In a copy of his own publication called Old Portuguese Republic, by A . H.de Oliveira Marques, 1981) his dedication already demonstrated some of his sense of humour, which is one of his strong characteristics: “I dedicate this book to my wife Ana Maria Gruner for the imperturbable calm with which she accepts the existence of a collection of about 50 thousand postcards in her home”. From that date on until today, several thousands of other cards have been added, reaching over 120 thousand pieces, which obviously are not only from Portutal but also precious rarities from other countries, that manage to invade the new spaces strategically engendered by him. All this treasure has become meaningful thanks only to the use Gruner has made of it. Among many other colaborations to magazines and different publications we can mention: Espaço T.Magazine – Jan. 7, 1981. Collecting Magazine – Articles about postcards from n. 2 to n. 6, 1984. Mais Magazine – Article entitled “Our grand parent’s eroticism”, September 28, 1984. Atlantis Magazine – n.3, March/June 1987. As for exhibitions, Klaus Gruner contributed to the realization of the “First National Exposition of Olden Postcards” from February to April 1984, with the backing of both the Ministry of Culture and of the Municipal Council, which originated the great consultation book on Portuguese postcards – Portugal on the first quarter of the XXth Century as documented in The Illustrated Postcard by Vicente de Sousa and Neto Jacob, printed by the Municipal Council of Bragança in December, 1985. According to a lecture given at the Rotary Club at the same period in Lisbon, abou 50% of the 5.206 postcards shown in this book came from Mr. Gruner’s collection. Still in the same year of 1985 (April 13th), w can point out the Commemorative Exhibition for the celebration of Rio de Janeiro Day in Lisbon, which took place at the Mitra Palace, sponsored by the Municipal Council and organized by the group “Friends of Lisbon”. From October 5 to October 9, 1986, the Evocative Exposition of the 76th anniversary of the proclamation of the Republic took place at the Conselho Courts in Lisbon and was inaugurated by Dr.Mario Soares, President of the Republic, and also counted with his kind collaboration. It would be tiring to mention every event in which Klaus Gruner participated. His enormous interest in divulging and sharing his knowledge with other collectors, whether Portuguese or otherwise, (especially with Brazilians) turned him into a kind of a postcard embassador of his country. The pleasure he takes in helping his friends and fellow collectors also demonstrates his facets of altruism and solidarity, for he is ever ready to part with pieces of his collection, something which certainly should not be easy for him to do. He has captivated innumerable people with his unsurpassed kindness and hospitality. Klaus W. Gruner is indoubtedly one of the great exponents of deltiology in the world. Yolanda
